Isolated in my parents’ basement during a raging pandemic, I spent my time tinkering with After Effects. For much of the ensuing year, I experimented with animation through small, self-initiated, one-off projects.
I explored two avenues of motion design: vector illustration and kinetic typography. In both cases, I explored how static images might imply motion, whether through pictorial depictions or literal text.
Working with images as subjects, I considered how an object might enter or leave the frame, what might be hidden inside an object, and how color could set a particular tone. Each resulting animation is a succinct loop showcasing an idea related to the static image.
Working with type as subjects, I considered the typeface used, text depicted, and overall composition. Each resulting animation is a self-referential play on these components. Color here is secondary—I originally designed these animations with arbitrary monochrome palettes, but have removed the color choices as they do not add further meaning.
