“This is a show” was my final project for Graduate Type Studio I, which I completed as part of RISD’s 3-year MFA in Graphic Design. Nancy Skolos taught the course during the Fall 2021 semester.
From the final project description:
“Create a zine to highlight your various investigations and projects so far, as well as expand on a theme with editorial typographic and visual content including: a 1000–2000 word text, designed as spreads with accompanying photos or illustrations; a cover; a zine title type treatment; and, a system for running heads and folios. Think if it as a process book that shows your typographic approach.”
For my zine's main text, I selected Ashley Lee’s article for the Los Angeles Times, “Inside the battle to change a prestigious theater festival’s ‘broken’ culture”. As mentioned in the project description, the zine built upon work I had completed throughout the semester that related to the theme of performance, but not necessarily to the article directly.

I designed and produced the zine using paper and measurements based on The Atlantic, as I wanted to juxtapose the playful nature of theater and performance with the article’s serious tone and subject.
